ASX200 A.M Wrap 31 May 2018

In our local market the ASX200 is trading at 6,013.20 up 28.47 or +0.48% as Energy Sector dominates +1.69%. BHP +1.43% is in the headlines as the Samrco negotiations deadline between Samarco Mineracao and shareholders, Vale and BHP Billiton Brazil has been extended by a Brazilian court. WorleyParsons (WOR) has won an oil contract with Tullow Oil in Kenya to provide services for the foundation phase of the South Lokichar onshore oil field development. Shares are higher by 3.16%. Stocks going ex-div include CSR Ltd (CSR) +0.7%, Orica (ORI) -0.17% while stocks receiving ratings changes include Orocobre (ORE) upgraded to a buy at Cormark, Wesfarmers (WES) +0.66% and Woolworths (WOW) +0.38% both were reinstated by Goldman as a buy and neutral, respectively.

In our local market the ASX200 is trading at 6,029.00 down 3.51 points or -0.06% with Consumer Discretionary stocks +1.50% leading the way. Across Asia the HANG SENG is down 1.82% and the NIKKEI is down 0.68%. Aristocrat Leisure (ALL) shares opened 5.3 percent higher, their biggest gain since May 2016 as the company reported first half year net income at $256.5 million and revenue of $1.58 billion. Alumina (AWC) had its annual meeting where the company see demand forecast to grow by 4%. Commonwealth Bank (CBA) plans to increase regulatory reform fee for pension fund members in June 2018.

In our local market the ASX200 is trading at 6,095.40 higher by 1.14 points or +0.02% with the Health Care sector leading the gains higher by a strong +2.81%, whilst Materials -0.89% falling behind. In corporate news, CSL Limited (CSL) +4.35% have lifted their profit guidance where shareholders can expect a profit of approximately between U.S. $1.68 and U.S. $1.71 billion in its 2018 financial year. CDA +6.57% has announced a deal BHP -0.91% to supply its underground mine tracking and fleet management system, a deal worth $9.5 million.

In our local market the ASX200 is trading at 6,092.90 down 14.06 points or -0.23%with Industrials -1.33% posting the largest losses for the morning. In corporate news, DuluxGroup (DLX) -0.87% after hitting $8.20 is trading at $7.98, reported its half-year financial report where a 4.2% increase in revenue and a profit of $79.2 million, up 9% from the previous period. Kidman Resources Limited (KDR) +2.78% announced a raw material supply agreement with Tesla where the company will supply lithium hydroxide from a planned refinery in Western Australia for an initial term of three years. Among the financials, Westpac (WDC) goes ex-dividend today, shares are down -0.48%, ANZ +0.40% received a broker upgrade to outperform form Credit Suisse, whilst NAB -0.11% was downgraded to neutral.

Investors will be watching out for employment data released at 11.30am (AEST). The market is expecting the employment change to come in at 20,000 new jobs and the unemployment rate to remain steady at 5.5%.

In our local market the ASX200 is currently trading at 6,129.80 up 11.05 points or 0.18% as strength in the Tech +0.78% and Consumer Discretionary 0.78% sectors push the index higher. Utilities and Financials are among the weaker sectors down -0.53% and -0.20% respectively.

On the earnings front Graincorp’s (GNC) half-year net profit has dropped 60 per cent to $36.1 million falling 60%. Shares are down -0.9%.Super Retail Group (SUL) received a broker upgrade to overweight from JPMorgan and shares are up +3.37%.

ASX200 A.M Wrap 10 May 2018

In our local market, the ASX200 is currently trading at 6127.10 up 19.08 points or +0.31%, with the Energy sector +1.85%. On the flip-side we are seeing some weakness in the Telecommunication sector -1.55%. This morning we saw the RBNZ keep the cash rate on hold at 1.75% as expected, however we saw the New Zealand dollar take a hit against the U.S. dollar down from 0.6980 to 0.6933. 

Inflation data to be released today at 11:30 am local time from China, the Producer Price Index (YoY) for April along with the Consumer Price Index (YoY) will give investors an eye into the Chinese economy. The market is expecting PPI to rise 3.4% from the prior month and CPI to fall to 1.9% from 2.1% in March.

President Trump says no deal as he decided to pull out from the Iran nuclear deal overnight, sending oil stocks in decline.  Oil prices paired losses after President Trump’s announcement as WTI crude oil settled at $69.06 up from the day’s low of $67.63. Brent crude closed at $74.85 a barrel settling higher from the day’s low of $73.10. See Brent crude chart below.
